3. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
In keeping with his apocalyptic vision, George Miller has returned to the Mad Max franchise with (excuse me) a fury, producing a prequel to 2015's Fury Road centred on Charlize Theron's indomitable warrior Furiosa (played here by Alyla Brown and then Anya Taylor-Joy).
Employing the same practical action sequences that made previous offerings soar so spectacularly, Miller's latest might just be the best chapter in the series, following Furiosa as she becomes a hardened survivor within a world without peace or repentance.
Taylor-Joy injects this action with an intense emotional centre, with a performance that proves silence doesn't mean someone is saying nothing, but it's Chris Hemsworth's against-type turn as the pathetic, speechifying gang leader Dementus that steals the show and gives Furiosa its beating black heart.
Gritty, monstrous and emotionally rich, Furiosa showcases the lengths broken people will go to seek revenge, love, security and hope against the odds, and the results are divine. Wherever Miller goes next, we'll be wise to follow.
