The film that made comic book movies cool again, this Brian Singer directed film was the one that made Hugh Jackman a megastar. While introducing the world of mutants and the three way battle between the good mutants, evil mutants and the humans, this really is Wolverine's film.

As we all know now, Jackman is a super talent, bringing Wolverine's bitter and jaded 'don't give a s***' personality to life. The character of Wolverine very much starts as an anti-hero, half weighing up which side of the mutant wars he wishes to be on. It is his relationship with Anna Paquin's Rogue that is crucial here, keeping Mister Logan on the straight and narrow as much as possible.

Ian McKellen is brilliant as the primary villain Magneto, bringing great depth to a role that could have easily have turned to a caricature with a lesser actor. Patrick Stewart perfectly embodies Professor X, his kindly tone and measured nature making him the perfect spiritual leader for the group.

The film definitely holds up on future viewings and is better structured than the fun but convoluted sequel that followed. There is never any doubt who you are cheering for here, which makes it a far more enjoyable viewing experience for a comic book film.
