Perhaps the most un-kid friendly of the Pixar films, but that doesn't stop this film from entering the 'classic' status. The choice to base an animated adventure around the dull and meaningless life of a grieving senior citizen appeared a step too far for Pixar, but thankfully it proves a delight.
The opening fifteen minute sequence is one of the most heartbreaking film sequences, as we watch a montage of Carl Fredricksen's life. From falling in love, to not being able to have children, to finally losing the love of his life, it is impossible to watch this part of the film without shedding a tear.
The film literally launches itself out from its glum state when Carl ties balloons to the roof of his house and takes off. From this point on the film is an absolute hoot, with Carl teaming up with unexpected stowaway Russell, a young scout, as they aim to protect a unique bird from the hands of evil explorer Charles F. Muntz and his army of 'talking dogs'.
Everything about this film is perfectly executed, the voicework outstanding, especially from Ed Asner in the central role as Carl. Any scene featuring Dug the 'talking' Dog is a highlight, his goofy antics providing much of the film's humour. The final fight scene between our elderly hero and villain is utterly hilarious, their physical frailties producing comic gold.
