5. Star Wars

Avengers Endgame
Lucasfilm

The original Star Wars movie has taken on legendary status over the years, each line quoted ad nauseam, each lightsaber battle replayed in children's bedrooms around the globe. The film is full of complex characters without any unnecessary complexities in the script, the epic battle behind good and bad at the heart of the story.

George Lucas produced his best directorial work here, the ability to take on feedback and use others creative skills to enhance his film not leaving him until the prequels. The cinematography is amazing, the score is one of cinema's greatest, the acting from legends such as Sir Alec Guiness is first rate, and the script is pretty damn faultless.

While Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Darth Vader are the characters most recognisable, the film is actually anchored around two robots and a renegade pilot. The robot characters of R2-D2 and C-3PO steal all the earlier scenes, Anthony Daniels delicious comic timing making every interaction between the two work.

The final acts moves its focus to Harrison Ford's iconic role of Han Solo, the kind of guy you'd love to have a drink with, providing he doesn't owe you money. While Princess Leia and Luke were noble characters anyway, it is Han's journey from morally and financial bankrupt pilot to hero of the day that gives the film its heart.

With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
