3. X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Avengers Endgame
20th Century Studios

Not only one of the best executed ret-cons in history, but also one of the all time great comic based films. With the original X-Men franchise starting to falter and the new 'Origins' cast on a high, the bold decision was made to combine both casts in one mega movie.

The film kicks off with the gradual annihilation of all mutant kind in a dystopian future, with Sentinels having seemingly destroyed most of Earth. As the last remaining mutants cling on for life, Wolverine is sent back through time on a mission to stop the events that will lead to the nightmarish future.

Hugh Jackman brings some real heart to the role of Wolverine, the reluctant leader with whom the fate of the mutants rests. Michael Fassbender delivers more of the delicious villainy we expect from Magneto, although this time he is more of an anti-hero. Jennifer Lawerence utilises her full acting range to bring some depth to the role of Mystique, her want to take down the humans moving her into the role of primary antagonist.

The relationship between the different versions of Professor X is a real treat, James McAvoy's disgruntled and beaten version contrasting to Patrick Stewart's nuanced and wise elder. The moments where the two make a connection is where the film realises the film's potential to the maximum. The only down side is that we don't get the same moment between both Magnetos, especially as Ian McKellen feels a little wasted.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
