17. LA92
The National Geographic channel has a range of quality documentary films, including the breathtaking Free Solo. But when it comes to the top documentary film on the channel, it's impossible to look past the incredible LA92. The documentary tells the story of the Los Angeles riots, the event that was triggered by video footage of the mistreatment of criminal Rodney King.
The exploration of the court case that triggered the riots of '92 is a staggering insight to the systemic racism present in the country at the time, and arguably still is. Rather than represent the savage beating ex-criminal Rodney King received at the hands of corrupt police as the sole reason for the subsequent riots, the film clearly shows that it was instead the final straw.
While the film goes to great detail to explain the justified anger that lead to the riot's outbreak, it doesn't back away from portraying the rioters in a negative light. Viewing footage of elder gentlemen in tears as their businesses are burnt to the ground by fellow Black Americans hits home the hardest.
The film works so well because it simply tells it how it was. There is no backing away from the crimes committed on both sides of the racial divide, and lets the facts and archival footage condemn them both. The most powerful moment comes from Rodney King himself, his tearful begging of 'Can't we all just get along', resonating just as much today as it did then.
