16. Home Alone
One of the greatest Christmas movies ever created and a movie that is unlikely to ever be made in a similar vain again, this 1990 John Hughes film is nigh on perfect. The film's ham fisted violence would never be replicated in our current climate, but is delivered in the style of the old Warner Bros. cartoons, which is always great fun when viewed in the right spirit.
Macauley Culkin was just 9 years old when he delivered his performance as Kevin McAllister, in arguably the greatest performance by a child actor of all time. Culkin delivers the majority of the laughs and is a delight to be in his presence, despite his character's homicidal tendencies.
The set up of the nonsensical but fun premise that sees Kevin left home alone at Christmas by his negligent family is delivered with great humour, but it is Culkin's incredible anchoring performance in the film's final two acts that makes the film work so well. Be it through a raise of his eyebrows or a perfectly delivered monologue, Culkin outperforms the likes of Daniel Stern and Joe freaking Pesci.
The final act is a hoot for every child and kid at heart, every trap, every contraption bringing a new delightful comic moment.
