Avengers Endgame

The success of this largely comic film proved to be a huge stepping stone for MCU, with much greater faith being placed in the creative talents of its Director. The Thor franchise had been a clear weak point of the MCU until this movie, highlighted by the less than flattering results from Thor: The Dark World. The sacking of initial Director Patty Jenkins for that film proved a significant misfire, especially after her success with Wonder Woman.

Thankfully the job of revitalising the flailing franchise fell to the cooky Taika Waititi, a New Zealand Director who had primarily worked in comedies until this point. With Waititi's comic flare allowed to flourish, the film turned into an absolute hoot.

The script and direction allows for lead Chris Hemsworth to display his full comic range, his opening exchange with fire demon Sertur displaying how funny he can be. The ensemble cast is great too, the decision to portray the bewildered Bruce Banner and Hulk effectively at war with each other a great choice.

Tom Hiddleston is finally allowed some light moments as Loki, while Tessa Thompson's portrayal of the drunken Valkerie has surprising depth. Jeff Goldblum also appears, effectively as himself, and that's always a good thing.

The film doesn't lack for stakes either, the reveal of the God of Death Hela as the film's antagonist bringing about one of the biggest death counts seen in an MCU film to this point. The climax also pulls a game-changing twist, the death of Hela coming at a hefty cost.
