There hadn't quite been a film like it before and arguably hasn't been one like it since, an old fashioned Disney animated musical that was just as fun for the adults as it was for the young-uns. Lead by the all time great songwriting combination of Elton John and Tim Rice, the animated Lion King makes every post a winner.

While exploring the deeper issues of the search for meaning and the 'circle of life', the story here is primarily a coming of age story for young cub Simba. The first act is great old fashioned fun, with outstanding voice work from the likes of Home Improvement's Jonathon Taylor Thomas, Rowan Atkinson, Jonathon Irons and Darth Vader bringing soon to be classic numbers effortlessly to life.

The visuals are all first rate, the attention to detail exquisite in its hand drawn animations. The bright colours and detailed landscapes give way to the bleak terrains of the desert as the film takes a surprising shift to the dark side, a shock death for one of our protagonists a bold move that elevates the film well past expectations.

The final battle between Simba and Scar is truly epic in nature and truly frightening at points, the hyenas as terrifying a villain as seen in a family friendly film. Nathan Lane brings much needed levity to the final act as the hilarious meerkat Timon, bring a sense of fun within even the darkest moments.
