Wes Craven's original Scream is one of the most creative and purely enjoyable horror films ever made, arriving right at the crest of slasher fatigue and breathing fresh new life into the subgenre.

Between Craven's knowing direction and Kevin Williamson's ingenious script, Scream was a film made for horror fans tired of all the played-out genre conventions, while still managing to be as uniquely terrifying as it was funny.

The casting was immaculate throughout, it continually one-upped itself by smartly subverting expectations, and effectively created a formula that horror-comedies are still keenly imitating today.

Meta might be all the rage these days, but back in 1996 it was positively cutting edge.
