3. Booksmart (Lisa Kudrow)

Olivia Wilde's brilliant coming-of-age comedy is so much more than "the female Superbad" that it's been widely touted as - an affecting and deeply honest look at the twilight months of high school through the eyes of two nerdy young women.

Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein are remarkable as co-dependent pals Amy and Molly, in a film that expertly balances its prevailing heart with the more typical grossout humour.

The ensemble cast immeasurably boosts the material, though: Billie Lourd is a riot as Amy and Molly's loose canon classmate Gigi, and Skyler Gisondo is terrific as lonely rich kid Jared.

That's not to forget Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte, who are spectacular in their scenes as Amy's buttoned-down but well-meaning parents. That this film didn't make more of a dent at the box office and with the Academy is, honestly, embarrassing.
