20 Best Netflix 2017 Original Movies - Ranked
5. First They Killed My Father
Angelina Jolie's most assured directorial effort to date, this historical thriller based on Loung Ung's harrowing memoir is an intense, extremely discomforting look at life in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge regime, powered by a stunning performance from non-actress Sareum Srey Moch.
Jolie refuses to flinch away from the horrors of the Killing Fields but at the same time avoids exploiting the tragedy, while Anthony Dod Mantle's typically superb cinematography makes the film a beautiful feast in spite of its overpowering brutality.
Though the film didn't qualify for the Best Foreign Film Oscar shortlist, it is nevertheless one of 2017's most haunting and memorable foreign language films. Just make sure you've got the stomach for it.
