5. Hush

Mike Flanagan's elegantly simple horror film casts his real-life wife Kate Siegel as Maddie, a deaf woman who finds herself terrorised at her remote cabin in the woods.

Flanagan makes excellent use of his evidently low budget here, zeroing in on the absence of sound in Maddie's life and employing clever aural tricks to convey that to the audience.

If the spine of the story is familiar enough, it's all held together by Siegel, whose Maddie transcends the inherent vulnerability of he character to be a strong lead with real agency.

At just 81 minutes in length, Hush gets to the point quickly and delivers an uncommonly stripped-down, efficient, thinking person's riff on the home invasion movie.
