17. Hold The Dark

This new thriller from Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) didn't quite live up to the confident brilliance of his prior efforts, but it was nevertheless an agreeably bleak, atmospheric chiller with a terrific lead performance from the ever-reliable Jeffrey Wright.

The more surreal aspects of Hold the Dark's narrative won't vibe with all audiences - as they didn't with critics - but the eye-melting cinematography is a sure sight to behold, and Saulnier's methodical direction works more often than not.

Plus, it boasts one of the year's most visceral yet least talked-about shootouts, which'll sure as hell give your sound system quite the workout.
