5. Velvet Buzzsaw

Velvet Buzzsaw reunited writer-director Dan Gilroy with star Jake Gyllenhaal, and while the two couldn't recreate the pure magic they were able to capture with their previous collaboration - 2014's Nightcrawler - Velvet Buzzsaw is nonetheless a fun and quirky little horror-thriller that amusingly pokes fun at the pretentious nature of the art scene.

Thankfully, even if you have no interest whatsoever in said art scene, the movie lets you in on the joke. Characters will ramble on about various paintings and it's all clearly done in a mocking fashion, and when things turn nasty - and people start dropping like flies - it's the characters' involvement with these supposedly "amazing" art pieces that is to blame.

The only issue here is that the first ten minutes is painfully slow, but quibbles aside, Velvet Buzzsaw is a spooky and stylish ride for the vast majority of its runtime.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
