Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story watches like an accomplished play, featuring minimal sets and supporting cast so it can really focus on the titular story. The plot simply follows Charlie Barber (Adam Driver) and his wife, Nicole (Scarlett Johansson), as they struggle through an emotionally devastating divorce.

With brutal honesty and frank assessments of love just beginning and love ending, Marriage Story holds nothing back. Driver is the star of the show, and really should have won the Oscar (sorry, Joaquin) for his turn as a man coming to terms with the breakdown of his marriage and his part in it. Behind him, Johansson and an Oscar-winning Laura Dern also give career-best performances.

Marriage Story is not massively extravagant, focussing more on character interaction than anything else, but with such a well-crafted script and so many powerhouse performances, the film works to keep you glued to your seat through all the trauma and romantic friction it throws your way.
