20 Best Netflix Original Movies
15. Okja (2017)
Before stunning the world with his Best Picture-winning drama Parasite (2019), director Bong Joon-ho made Okja, a strange but wonderful film that follows Mija (Seo-Hyeon Ahn) as she cares for a large, gentle animal who also happens to be her best friend.
At its core, Okja is a tale of friendship, but also shines as an environmental fable and a daring satire of big business. Ahn is fantastic as Mija, equally parts funny and tragic as she battles to save her dearest friend despite the roadblocks put in her way.
Joon-ho brings his typical flare for the surreal to the film, making it a unique vision that juggles its various themes with competent skill. Jake Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton, Steven Yeun and Paul Dano all turn up in some impressive, hysterical supporting roles, and though some of the more serious themes of the film end up a touch heavy-handed, Okja is an undeniably magical experience.
