14. Klaus (2019)
Christmas animations are nothing new, but even then Klaus is one of the most affecting and original family adventures of recent years. Written and directed by Despicable Me creator Sergio Pablos, the film tells a sweet and wholesome origin story for Santa Claus, and does so with great voice acting (J.K Simmons, Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman) and stunning visuals.
With Klaus, Pablos made it his mission to create a film removed from the more contemporary 3D way of things and crafted it using an updated form of 2D animation, hand-drawn with remarkable results to give the whole thing a glossy, smooth aesthetic.
The results are to die for. Klaus boasts vibrant colours, sweeping visuals and a riveting story to boot, creating a film that is as unique as it is funny and touching. For future generations Klaus is sure to become an all-time holiday classic.
