Far from Netflix's most feel-good film to date, Pieces of a Woman is nonetheless a sweeping tour de force that reaps many rewards for those willing to sit through its most gruelling sequences. Venessa Kirby stars as Martha, a woman whose home birth ends in unspeakable tragedy and turns her life upside down.
Kirby is the star of the film, giving a performance that is every bit as award-worthy and complex as the reviews suggest, whilst supporting stars Ellen Burstyn and Shia LaBeouf (despite the uncomfortable real-life parallels his role creates) add brilliantly to the melodramatic beats of the film's most hard-hitting moments.
Pieces of a Woman, as noted, is far from an easy film to watch, but as a portrait of grief, loss and emotional healing it's a stroke of cinematic brilliance. Just be sure to watch it when you're really in the right mood, okay?
