6. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

Universal PicturesEdgar Wright's first foray into the Hollywood studio system saw him tackle an adaptation of the relatively obscure comic book character created by Bryan Lee O'Malley. Although the movie ultimately disappointed at the box office, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is loaded with inventive visuals, great performances and a string of genre-hopping set-pieces. Essentially a video game movie that isn't based on a video game, Wright deploys every trick in his cinematic arsenal inspired by everything from old-school 8-bit Nintendo to the coming-of-age story via comic book panels come to life. Michael Cera dials back his usual quirks as the hapless title character but is overshadowed by the supporting players, particularly hilarious supporting turns from Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans and Brandon Routh. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a movie intended directly for its target audience, and delivers a truly unique comic book adaptation that carries plenty of heart and humor to complement the unrelenting stylistic flourishes.
