How can any film that begins on a lingering glimpse of a gorgeous Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever be all bad?

Indie horror sensation Good Boy immediately introduces us to its canine protagonist, Indy (played by director Ben Leonberg's dog, also called Indy), as he presides over his sleeping, sickly owner Todd (Shane Jensen) and looks with concern at the apparent paranormal phenomena enveloping their abode.

After Todd begins bleeding from the mouth per his chronic lung condition, his sister Vera (Arielle Friedman) arrives and calls an ambulance.

This leads into an adorable credits sequence featuring real footage of a young Indy as shot by Leonberg years prior, intercut with new footage of Todd and Indy playing together.

While the film as a whole may not be for all tastes, as a bold feat of micro-budget filmmaking which keeps us with its canine protagonist at all times, it's bracingly effective from its very first frame.
