Florence Pugh was undeniably fantastic in Midsommar, but the best performance Ari Aster has directed thus far has to be from Toni Collette in the staggeringly disturbing Hereditary.

In the film, Collette delivers a powerhouse performance as Annie Graham, a woman who, following a massive tragedy, struggles to keep her family together as her grief begins to swallow her whole and a series of family secrets begin to emerge around her.

Collette's performance is an all-consuming portrayal of the grieving process, one that constantly manages to move between endearing and tragic to terrifying and dangerously unhinged. She's ultimately sympathetic, but her anger and emotional distress is so raw it's impossible not to be utterly petrified of her.

That she wasn't nominated for an Oscar is sure to be remembered in time as one of the Academy's biggest travesties, but even without the formal industry recognition, Collette's performance is unquestionably one of the best of the 2010s, and a sure-fire horror classic.
