20 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century
8. Sunshine
Sunshine is one of the most claustrophobic films to have ever been made. That isn't to suggest that the characters involved are confined to small spaces throughout its duration though. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland both understand precisely what claustrophobia is. That it's not so much a physical feeling, but rather a psychological one. claustrophobia is the profound feeling of being trapped with no hope of escape. End of.
Not only is Sunshine one of the most intense sci-fi movies of the century, it also showcases just how fragile the human mind is - particularly one that's already convinced of its own brilliance. Throughout Sunshine our collection of heroes are all shown to truly believe in the astronomical (sorry) task that they've undertaken, but they're not free from ego either - leading to disastrous consequences.
It also has to be said that it is both somehow admirable and repulsive how quickly Capa and crew decide to sacrifice one of their own for the sake of their mission. Sunshine highlights both the best and the most hideous aspects of humanity, and, worst of all, just how necessary each of those are for us to survive.
