20 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century

6. The World's End

If we could've put every single one of Edgar Wright's movies on here then we would've, but, alas, life - and restrictions due to genre specific titles - are truly a cruel mistress.

The World's End saw the end of Edgar Wright's Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy and it ended in spectacular fashion. The World's End allowed the entire cast, particularly Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, to show off the very best of their comedy chops whilst also reaching surprising new highs emotionally speaking. The World's End takes a tonal shift near the end that pays off beautifully, perfectly conveying the desperation that Gary has to rekindle the best days of his life and illustrating his reasons for doing so.

As is the case with Wright's other output, the action sequences in The World's End are beautifully choreographed and just as gloriously gruesome and gory as Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz - even if that gore comes in the form of blue goo rather than vermillion viscera.

Plus, the dialogue is as sharp and funny as anything else you'll see. Without giving it away to those who haven't seen, is there a better way to tell a godlike alien being that you won't play by his rules or accept his terms? here's a hint: no.

Johnny sat by the fire, idly swirling his brandy, flicking through the pages of War and Peace, wondering whether it was pretentious to write his bio in the third person.
