20 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century
5. I'm A Cyborg, But That's Okay
One of the single weirdest entries on this list by a country mile, and that's really saying something considering some of the entries. Not only that, but I'm A Cyborg is criminally underrated to this day.
This movie comes from Park Chan-wook, arguably most famous for the classic psychological thriller Oldboy. Although it's something of a departure from the ultra violence of his previous films - it's something of a romcom, actually - make no mistake that this film is instantly identifiable as a Park movie. And it's every bit as odd too.
A young woman, Young-goon, is committed to a mental institution after what was perceived as a suicide attempt - in fact, she believes she's a cyborg and was trying to "recharge". She also refuses to eat, instead licking batteries to "recharge". A young, schizophrenic man, Il-soon, slowly falls in love with Young-goon and, not wanting her to starve, convinces her that he can install software that will allow her to eat.
This does no justice to just how wonderfully odd this film is. Not only is it bizarre, but it is such a strangely beautiful movie too. Do yourself a favour and watch it if you haven't already.
