20 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century

16. Looper

Sunshine Close Up
TriStar Pictures/FilmDistrict

Dodgy prosthetics and eyebrows aside, Looper is one of the most solid time travel films to come out this century. The reason that Looper works so well as a time travel film is because writer/director Rian Johnson understands the inherently confusing rules of time travel as well as its inherent impossibility...and just completely ignores it.

One of the best scenes in the film is when Joe speaks to his older self in a diner and tries to make sense of the timeline being described to him. Future Joe discourages him doing this saying that "this time travel s*** will just make your head hurt." Joe isn't just telling himself this, he's also acting as a conduit for Johnson to the audience. Here Johnson is telling the audience almost directly not to try and make sense of any of it, because it doesn't make sense! Just shut up and enjoy the film.

Looper is tightly structured thriller too. From the first scene to the last, Looper is unsettling and unnerving. It's core concept is fascinating as well. How could a film about time travel assassins who take out hits on themselves not end up being genius?

Johnny sat by the fire, idly swirling his brandy, flicking through the pages of War and Peace, wondering whether it was pretentious to write his bio in the third person.
