20 Best Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 21st Century
10. Mandy
Mandy may not have the massive budget behind it that others on this list do, but that doesn't make it any less of a spectacle.
Director Panos Cosmatos already struck weird with his previous film, Beyond the Black Rainbow, and had his sights set on bigger things with Mandy. Add some Nicholas Cage to the mix and you've got an instant recipe for some magic... hopefully.
Giving off retro-future vibes, much like Turbo Kid, Mandy instead goes down the very dark path for this revenge story.
Cage is... well, peak Cage in this drug-fueled, ultra-violent voyage of destruction after seeing his wife murdered before him. Forging an axe and a one man army level of rage, his character Red's rampage is one of twisted yet captivating visuals.
Bolstered by a synth-heavy score from the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, Mandy definitely holds its place on the darker end of the sci-fi spectrum.
Admittedly, it does start off a little slow. The scene is set very early into the film, whilst it takes the best part of an hour to get the ball rolling.
But when it is rolling though, you can't help but follow in its wake.
