20 Best Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

9. Life

I can't say I've ever watched an Alien film and thought, "You know what the xenomorphs need? Cute names".

Yet that's the case in 2017's Life, a cautionary space horror story about the dangers of naming unknown, extraterrestrial entities in the name of science.

Because they may seem cute at first, but when little Calvin forces himself inside poor Ryan Reynolds (orally, thankfully) and devours his organs whilst in there, there goes any semblance of cuteness.

Detractors may say that Life is imitating Alien (the art, in this instance) but I would say it has a more Species bent to it. Not in "seductive, mating killing machine" sense, but in a "we shouldn't have nurtured this seemingly innocent alien" kind of way.

Daniel Espinosa has done a great job behind the camera at conveying the dread when faced with an enemy that can use your tiny confines against you. When your alien is the size of violent Flubber, you can work with confined space.

It does fall into samey territory towards the end, so don't expect any major twists on established tropes. But at the same time, don't expect any super-happy endings either.
