20 Best Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

11. The Butterfly Effect

Alright, I have a thing about time travel films with a strong psychological, borderline horror theme running through them. Sue me.

Whereas Donnie Darko may have flirted with the horror theme, there's no denying that the Ashton Kutcher led Butterfly Effect has some much darker themes to it.

Child abuse, suicide and prison crime, all are hard hitting themes in this movie, which can be pretty tense for some.

But what makes it an unnerving watch is that for every time Kutcher's Evan tries to do the right thing with his time travel powers, it ends up causing more damage in the long term.

For every jump back sees him divert one potential trauma, only for something worse to replace it. By the end, it's an upsetting tale of good intentions gone wrong, making for an uncomfortable watch at times.

The horror aspect is the anticipation of what could happen next, a sort of "frying pan into the fire" metaphor made worse with the manipulation of time and causality.

Just, and this is important, only watch this one. Never touch the sequels.
