20 Best Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 21st Century
7. The Cabin in the Woods
Just because Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard set out to parody the teen horror market doesn't mean The Cabin in the Woods isn't a great teen horror flick.
In fact, that it subverts the genre is what makes it a great sc-fi horror film at all.
It's hard to recommend TCitW without giving it away. In fact, that intro alone is probably the limit, hopefully intended to bait and entice you in, rather than bludgeon you with the plot synopsis.
For the cynical, yes it does have Buffy/Avengers-esque levels of snarky dialogue between its "young" cast. But to be fair, this was 2011, we hadn't had a sassy overload from years of Marvel phases to deal with yet.
It's not just the "teens" that sell it, though (I say teens, Chris Hemworth and co were in their twenties when they made this). Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford steal whatever scene they're in, but that's all I'll say about that.
The best way to approach Cabin... is to know nothing about it. That way, you can be surprised by the genre-bending tale within.
