Total Copies Sold: 5,409,004 Yeah, as we were saying, people really do love Despicable Me. While the second was rather lightweight, a release date well away from other animated features created one of 2013's biggest box office surprises. The film's extreme focus on the minions (who are getting their own spin-off in 2015) certainly played a big part in capturing children's attention. After the first film sparked a bunch of imitators trying to replicate their little, gibberish-spouting magic (animals in The Lorax, the brothers in Brave), they reached full market saturation after the sequel; with backpacks, plush toys and all that jazz expect them to be a key childhood element for a whole generation. As we've seen already, a profitable run at the box office for a family film will almost definitely translate to home video success - it's always a good way for parents to get some entertaining quiet - although we must say it's a shame some kids are growing up with this over Pixar or Disney.
