20 Best Superhero Movies Since The Dark Knight
7. Chronicle
Chronicle is the best found-footage film ever made.
A film that presents what seems to be a typical superhero origin story before taking it in dark, haunting directions, Chronicle is a wonderfully plotted, deeply wrenching tragedy written and directed with the paranoid energy of a supernatural horror flick.
It's as powerful as it is relentlessly compelling, and while many movies have subverted and deconstructed the superhero genre, very, very few films have done this as well as Chronicle.
As for the film's found-footage cinematography, it could've been a complete gimmick but in fact, it works wonders and puts viewers right in the centre of the action. Chronicle is further enhanced by Dane DeHaan's outstanding lead performance, as well as terrific support from Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan and Michael Kelly.
And yes, director Josh Trank is the man behind Fantastic Four, which is probably the worst superhero film this decade, but don't let that put you off. However bad the subsequent output of both Trank and writer Max Landis has been, they created one of the finest and most grippingly original superhero films of the decade here.
