20 Best Superhero Movies Since The Dark Knight
6. Logan
The X-Men films were an impressive franchise overall, but there was often a sense that they could've been even better. They didn't always blend their thought-provoking themes and cartoonish action scenes all that well and some of them would've benefitted from being a bit more adult.
Perhaps that is why Logan is the ultimate X-Men movie. It goes into bleak, R-rated territory and delivers an exceptionally powerful, hauntingly dark yet also hopeful exploration of the franchise's themes without having to soften anything.
Logan is the X-Men movie that really, truly realizes the franchise's powerful social commentary in the strongest way, but this is just one of the many reasons why Logan is such a modern classic.
Oscar-worthy performances from Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart, a devastatingly emotional screenplay and brutally brilliant set-pieces make Logan one of the most artistically accomplished, mature and hauntingly powerful things this genre has ever given us. It's depressing as hell and certainly not one of the most enjoyable superhero pictures ever made, but it is unquestionably one of the best.
It occasionally veers into cliched territory, but other than that Logan is a complete and absolute triumph, and the greatest X-Men movie of all time. Hell, it ain't even close.
Frankly, this movie should've been nominated for Best Picture. It really is that good.
