20 Best Survival Movies Of All Time
6. The Edge
1996's adventure drama film The Edge stars Anthony Hopkins alongside Alec Baldwin as the two men lost in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash. Together, they must work together to reach civilisation and find safety once more.
It's a classic set-up; two unlikely allies paired together in the most extreme of circumstances. They're alone, without communication to anyone who could possibly help them, and there's a really big bear after them. But amongst all these classic survival movie tropes, there is also the added tension between the two leads.
Charles Morse (Hopkins) is married to Mickey (Elle MacPherson), and belives Robert Green (Baldwin) is having an affair with her.
So amongst the thick wildfire around, the bear threat (which is an actual threat rather than some tacky anti-climax) there are two men as love-rivals. As the situation grows more combustible, the men must come face to face with their pasts and their mistakes, and find a way to survive.
It's typical survival flick stuff, but thanks to a solid performances from both Hopkins and Baldwin and clever direction from Lee Tamahori, it's also compelling and engaging stuff.
