20 Best & Worst Movies From 2016 Oscar Nominees

19. Jennifer Lawrence

Best: Silver Linings Playbook (2012) Lawrence's great performances are all at a similar sort of level, but inevitably the opportunity to play a complex, wounded identity like Tiffany for Silver Linings Playbook brought something more out of her. Her take on the character is rich and volatile, and most impressively she offers balance to Bradley Cooper's explosive co-lead without being chewed up and spat out. Her segues from anger to pricked nerve sadness are a joy to watch, and there's something irresistibly infantile about her outer behaviour that peels away to reveal the broken toy beneath. Worst: House At The End Of The Street (2012) Unthinkably, Lawrence followed up the Oscar winner with this mediocre, by the numbers horror featuring such cliches as a house with a mysterious past, a dark, alluring neighbour boy and terrible, terrible parents. Lawrence hadn't quite made it to the A-list when this was made, so it's vaguely forgivable, but it feels like a jobbing gig and she's barely challenged.
