20 Best & Worst Movies From 2018 Oscar Nominees
15. Frances McDormand
Best: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
The inevitable winner of the Best Actress category this year (if her clean-ups elsewhere are any indication), McDormand's performance in Three Billboards is a tough one to bear.
It's a powerhouse performance, deeply affecting and deep with complexity that goes well beyond the heinous acts her character commits. That she manages to balance pathos, pain and humour is astonishing.
Worst: Aeon Flux (2005)
There are a couple of notable reasons to dislike Aeon Flux. Firstly, it made making a Black Widow movie impossible as studio executives saw it as evidence that audiences didn't like female action movies, and secondly, it represents a rare low-point in McDormand's career. Other cast members emerge far worse from its boring, terribly written mess, but she's besmirched by proximity and it's a real shame.
