Best: If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)

After impressive turns in the likes of Jerry Maguire and Ray, Regina King's career-best work came in the exceptional If Beale Street Could Talk, which is deep, loving and beautifully made.

In this tale of ageless romance, which could have been an opportunity for Barry Jenkins to further his aesthetic agenda in the wake of Moonlight's Best Film picture, King is brilliant, frankly and her performance deserves both the critical acclaim and the awards attention it has received. Bu then she's played a powerful matriarch before - in Jerry Maguire - even though this is an entirely different prospect.

Worst: Our Family Wedding (2010)

An unfunny comedy collecting a catalogue of racial stereotypes and precious few jokes that raise much more than a smile, Our Family Wedding is a crime against its usually excellent cast, including King. It's worse than Adam Sandler's The Week Of, which shares story elements with it, which is pretty damning evidence.
