Best: The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

While his turn as Van Gogh in 2018's At Eternity's Gate pushed it hard, Willem Dafoe has never been better than when he played Jesus Christ in The Last Temptation Of Christ. His is arguably also the best ever performance of Jesus and a lot of that has to do with what Dafoe brings to his humanity rather than his divinity.

In this unflinching account, Dafoe is angst-ridden and self-loathing and struggling with an identity crisis and it's a hell of a comment on the identity of the son of God that is darker and braver (and inevitably more controversial) than we've ever seen before.

Worst: Fireflies In The Garden (2008)

Dafoe isn't usually one for making bad movies - or even being bad in movies - but in a rare dip in form for Dennis Lee's Fireflies in the Garden, he simply doesn't look interested. The same could be said of his nonsense role in Aquaman, but there's a lot more fun in that movie generally and this story of bereavement, murder and strained relationships is no more than boring melodrama.
