20 Best & Worst Movies From 2019 Oscar Nominees
7. Adam Driver
Best: BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Adam Driver is one of the most interesting - as well as one of the most interesting-looking - actors working today and while it's a shame that John David Washington's performance for Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman wasn't also acknowledged, it feels right that his at least was.
As Detective Flip Zimmerman, who works as Washington's physical stand-in as they come together to infiltrate the KKK, he is subtle and charming and the way he balances two performances at once - and how horrible authentic his slip into fascism is - is testament to how great he is here.
Worst: This Is Where I Leave You (2014)
Generally speaking, Driver is excellent in most things he's in and only this dramedy and the unfortunately boring J Edgar are real missteps in his career so far. Neither can be blamed on bad choices either, as the latter was made by Clint Eastwood and looked a home-run and the former had a great cast.
But with This Is Where I Leave You, Driver is utterly wasted (as the rest of the cast are) by poor material that fails to be either comic or particularly dramatic. It's just a nothing movie.
