20 Crazy Facts You Just Have To Accept To Enjoy The Transformers Franchise
14. Rampant Racism
Oh God, where to begin? One of the biggest criticisms of Revenge of the Fallen was the introduction of two new Transformer characters, Skids and Mudflap, who with their jive talk, good teeth and bone-headedness, were perceived to be unsavoury caricatures of stereotypical black American gang-bangers. Then there's the appearance of Ken Jeong in Dark of the Moon as Jerry Wang, who introduces himself to Sam as "Wang, Deep Wang", and the Asian mockery continues in Age of Extinction, with Ken Watanabe playing a stereotypical Japanese Samurai robot, Drift. Then there's Li Bingbing's character: though she is, as mentioned, the most likeable and useful female character in the entire series, because she's Asian, she absolutely has to know martial arts, of course. To some it might just be a little fun indulging in stereotypes, but it's one of the few aspects of these movies that actually induces more groaning than the dumb plotting.
