20 Most Cringeworthy Moments In The New Star Trek Movies
6. Young Spock Phones Home From Star Trek Into Darkness
Forgive us for nitpicking, but here we go: the Enterprise is being outgunned and menaced by a much larger Federation ship. Coms are down so that they can't call for help. Kirk and Khan have just made their way onto the enemy ship in a tense sequence. And the first thing that Young Spock does when he gets a spare moment is... call his older counterpart on New Vulcan to ask about Khan (whose name he knows by now). Elder Spock says he has sworn not to alter the timeline further than he already has - but he decides to do it anyway. This scene is cringey in so many ways. Look, we appreciate having Leonard Nimoy whenever we can get him, but the timing of this scene is ridiculous, especially given Uhura's earlier announcement that the coms are down and they can't call for help. Apparently the coms are back at this point, and now they are able to call for help. Which, of course, they've just done. But it's a bit like deciding not to call 911 and calling your great-grandpa instead. And how does this scene further the plot in the least, since Kirk and Spock already distrust Khan?
