20 Most Cringeworthy Moments In The New Star Trek Movies
18. The Kobayashi Maru Test From Star Trek
It has been noted on many occasions that nothing about a character says "I'm a dick!" faster than having them eat an apple at an inappropriate moment. That's exactly why Abrams used the apple in this scene, and it works. Even without the apple, we've seen a version of this scene before, in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and despite the new bells and CGI whistles, this version pales by comparison. That version was dramatic and interesting. This one... bleh. It's not that the scene is unbelievable, mind you. We can easily believe that this version of Kirk would cheat on the no-win scenario test in exactly this manner. What's hard to believe is that even this version of Kirk would be so over-the-top blatant about his cheating that he would think no one would see right through it. Given his dialogue in Star Trek II, it would appear that Spock was not part of the programming of the original test, so maybe no one was there the first time to check for reprogramming. But it's doubtful that Kirk 1.0 was quite so crazily blithe about the whole thing that even Geordi LaForge would've been able to see through his clever ruse.
