20 Most Cringeworthy Star Trek Film Moments

15. Chekov's Interrogation - Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Paramount PicturesParamount PicturesIt's really no wonder that Walter Koenig has been known over the years to have said...unkind things about the Star Trek franchise, especially given the treatment of his character in this movie. In addition to the previous entry, the writers decide to give him another comedic scene later in the movie. This one is more cringeworthy because of changing attitudes in political correctness than anything to do with latent unfunniness, even though it's still got plenty of that. Despite eventually becoming Head of Security himself by Star Trek VI, Chekov is captured by the security on the nuclear wess- um, vessel Enterprise and has so much trouble understanding the questions being asked of him by his interrogator that said interrogator decides that he's "a retard, or something." Ouch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVOIig2xLq8 I suppose that we could talk about the rest of the scene, with the malfunctioning phaser (what the hell?) and the chase that turns from Keystone Cops-style shenanigans to deathly seriousness all within a few seconds. It's unclear whether we will have taken our faces out of our hands by that point yet.
