20 DVD Commentaries You Need To Hear Before You Die
11. True Romance
Participant(s): Quentin Tarantino Theres no short supply of commentaries available for 1993s beloved black comedy crime film True Romance, owing to the amount of world class creatives involved with the film. Tony Scott, Ridleys brother and the films director, provided an excellent accompaniment to the film which also shows real-time storyboard to film comparisons. Similarly Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette, who play the iconic couple Clarence and Alabama at the films core, give an excellent commentary and sound hilariously uncomfortable during the sex scene they shot back in 1993. However, by far the most compelling commentary which not just fans of True Romance but all cinema lovers should experience is Quentin Tarantino's (the film's screenwriter). Easily one of the most important figures in cinema over the last two decades, Tarantino knows an intimidating amount about films and you are compelled to hang on to his every word in this commentary. He reveals how True Romance was the screenplay which was always closest to his heart. As youd expect, Tarantinos analysis adds a whole new dimension to your appreciation of True Romance. We learn how the Hopper/Walker scene (or The Sicilian scene) was one of his proudest moments and he adds I had heard that whole speech about the Sicilians a long time ago, from a black guy living in my house... And I thought: 'Wow, that is a great scene, I gotta remember that'.
