The Death of Gwen Stacy in Amazing Spider-Man issues 121 and 122 is as well-known a comics story as Superman's death or Batman's broken spine. Cementing Peter's hatred of the Green Goblin, the story features Peter's love interest Gwen Stacy being hurled off a bridge by the Goblin. Peter attaches a strand of webbing to her legs, which stops her fall, but kills her via the whiplash effect.

The scenario is repeated in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with the same result: Peter catches Gwen with his webbing, only for the sudden stop to kill her.

Third time must be the charm.

In No Way Home, MJ falls off the Statue of Liberty after an explosion caused by the Green Goblin. 'Our' Peter dives to catch her, only to be taken out by Goblin on the way down. This leaves Spider-Garfield, still raw from the death of Gwen, to make the dive.

The shot is almost identical to the one in Amazing Spider-Man 2, including sound effects and composition. This time, though, Peter works with MJ's momentum, cradling her body and catching her before lowering them both to the ground.

The aftermath of this save, with a tearful Peter being asked by MJ 'Are you okay?', to which he smiles and nods yes, inspired the cheers and applause you no doubt heard if you saw this on opening night in a crowded theatre.
