20 Fantastic Blimps, Balloons, And Dirigibles In Movies
3. The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen (1988)
Terry Gilliam’s mind is a maze of beautiful and terrifying images, and it’s no surprise that this film captures equal parts of both.
Starring John Neville as the titular character whose exploits are being so poorly rendered in a stage show that the real Baron stands up from the audience to tell his own tale, his story is rife with adventures where he meets the King of the Moon, romances the goddess Venus, gets swallowed by a sea creature, and avoids the Angel of Death several times.
The film is charming, and so is Neville’s Baron; in fact, in order to escape a war-torn city, he literally charms the pants off the women in the playhouse. He gets all the women to give him their underwear, which he stitches together and turns into a hot air balloon that carries him all the way to the moon. Adventures don’t get much more exciting, funny, or weird than this one.
