20 Fantastic Blimps, Balloons, And Dirigibles In Movies

2. Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (1989)

Paramount Pictures

This third entry in the series from director Steven Spielberg does some amazing feats, the least of which is not that it is a third film in a franchise that is nearly as entertaining as the original. Indiana Jones is back to battle the Nazis again, and this time, he brought his Dad!

The film only has one scene in a blimp, but it has two excellent and memorable moments that make it worthy of inclusion on the list. The first is the scene where Spielberg somehow makes it riveting to watch Indiana Jones discover that… the blimp is slowly turning around! Through his use of shadows and editing, something as mundane as a puffy white airship turning around becomes an impressive and menacing threat.

And of course, when Indiana Jones punches a Nazi out of the airship, all the other passengers look at him, confused because he is dressed as a crewmember. His answer: “No ticket.” And everyone dives for their wallets and purses to find theirs. You can’t go wrong punching a Nazi.

Chris Vander Kaay knows the hidden secrets of the world, but he frequently forgets them. He has them written on a piece of paper along with his passwords, but he seems to have misplaced that as well.
