Here’s a real throwback for you. In fact, at the time of release, City Lights was a throwback in itself. With the rise of talking pictures in the early 1930s, Charlie Chaplin refused to move with the times and continued to make his cherished silent films. Regardless, this is one of Chaplin’s most adorable flicks as it tells a delightful tale of a tramp who falls in love with a blind flower girl. Her family is in financeable trouble so with the help of a wealthy man, the tramp raises money for the blind girl.

Charlie Chaplin has become the face of the silent movie era and City Lights is an example of why. Only he could direct such a sincere piece of storytelling narrated wonderfully through facial expressions and expertly crafted choreography. It’s romantic, funny, moving and it achieves it all without dialogue.
