20 Feel Good Movies You Need To Watch Now
12. La La Land (2016)
La La Land feels like a throwback to a classic MGM musical
from the 1950s but with an air of modern sensibility. it’s a return to stunning
Technicolor and, unlike most modern movies, relies very little on computer
graphics, giving each frame a much more natural appearance. It’s a gorgeous
achievement in contemporary cinematography and really enhances the whimsiness
of the movie’s mood.
The opening song “Another Day of Sun” immediately sets the tone of the film – an ironic twist on the usual stagey choreography number as it sees several regular people, dressed casual without any big props, emerging out of their vehicles to sin and dance in a bundle of traffic. The story sees Mia, an aspiring actress, develop a relationship with Sebastian, a man with goals of becoming a successful pianist. Each of them faces indignity in their ambitions with awkward auditions and embarrassing job roles in order to achieve their goals. But a hard decision comes for both of them: choose love or career?
Some people may not like the film’s ending but I think it’s
admirable how director Damien Chazelle went against the grain of a typical
happy ever after but still gave us a conclusion to the story which was still
satisfying and inspiring.
