Wes Anderson has become renowned for making very character driven movies which take on hefty themes often centred around loss, adultery, dysfunctional families and odd friendships but ignites them with a fast-paced script and some bizarrely witty humour. Even more well-known is Anderson’s stylistic art styles, heavily utilising flat space camera moves and hand-made art, which give all of his works that unique aesthetic.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is about as Wes Anderson as it gets. Right from the start to the very finish, the film is a visual feast in every element – right down to the backgrounds, lighting, colouring, shading, costumes and set designs. The ensemble is heavily star-studded but each and every one of them gives a fantastic performance and is not just cast for their name amidst this zany adventure flick. The dialogue is sharp and witty, the plot is action-packed and unpredictable and the characters all have distinctive personalities.

There’s so much going on within this Anderson flick that you must re-watch it to truly pick up all the hidden flourishes interlaced within the story. True, there is a great amount of melancholy to be found towards the end of the movie but the journey throughout the film is so enjoyable and enchanting that you feel better just to have experienced The Grand Budapest Hotel.
